02 The Borrowdale Yew(s)

Although my guide book refers to a single tree, these 4 feel much too connected to separate, so here they all are. I’m including the one that fell in 1883 in case you’re scratching your head. Magnificent and humbling 1,500 year old beauties. From magical Wordsworth:

“But worthier still of note,
Are those fraternal four of Borrowdale,
Joined in one solemn and capacious grove;
Huge trunks! and each particular trunk a growth
Of intertwisted fibres serpentine Up-coiling,
and inveterately convolved”
